During the warmer weather, the temptation to soak up the great outdoors grows stronger. The Pyrenees abounds with natural wonders and locations ideal for a night (or two) beneath the stars. All locations are beautiful, green and right amongst the trees and wilderness.

Mount Cole State Forest is a gorgeous location amongst old-growth temperate rainforest and fern filled gullies. Mount Cole is located one hours drive west of Ballarat, just off the Western Highway, 25 kilometres from the township of Beaufort and marks the gateway to the Grampians.

There are five campgrounds dotted throughout the park, all offering picnic tables, huts or undercover picnic area, fire pits and toilet. Availability for camping is on a first come basis. There is no charge for camping in the area.

No need to leave your fur baby at home, dogs are permitted throughout Mount Cole State Forest but must be kept on a lead at all times. A horse pen is located at the Chinamans Campground for those who like to explore on horseback.

Mount Buangor State Park – Relax at camp and immerse yourself in nature or explore one of the many walking trails in the area. Mount Buangor has 3 campsites that can be accessed via car and all have walking tracks that will lead you to explore eucalypt forest, creek flats, ferny gullies, waterfalls and escarpments. Middle Creek campground is ideal for larger groups, offering 30 unpowered campsites suitable for tents, camper trailers, campervans and caravans. Bailes campground and Ferntree camping area are suitable for tents only. Facilities include toilets, campfire, picnic tables and wood fired BBQ.

Pyrenees State Forest is a stunning destination that offers a mix of both culture and nature. Here, you’ll be treated to various wildlife sightings, lush forest, rugged mountain ranges, colourful wildflowers, and notable historic attractions. Pyrenees State Forest is located 200km northwest of Melbourne and is best accessed from Avoca via Vinoca Road. Home to 3 campgrounds – Waterfalls Campground, Camerons Track Campground and Glenpatrick campground, all offering quiet and shady sites for you to set up camp. Each campground  offer car-based camping where you can park your car next to or near to your tent or caravan, and you can even bring your dog! Campgrounds include toilets, shelter, picnic tables, fire pits and wood forest BBQs.

Avoca Riverside Free Camping – it is rare to find free camping in the centre of town which is what makes this location so popular for caravanners and motorhomes. Located on the banks of the Avoca River in the heart of the Avoca township and with an easy walking distance to the shopping strip and local hotel for convenience.

Located on along the river is a playground, skatepark, toilets, gazebo with electric BBQ and picnic tables. The area is a large clear flat area offering easy access for caravans and large vehicles.

Beaufort Township Free Camping offers provisions for large self-contained camping vehicles. A Free Camping site is located behind the Beaufort Community Church, 1 Park Road Beaufort, where self-contained vehicles can stay for up to 24 hours. There is no charge to stay, and pets on a lead are welcome.

Beaufort Lake Caravan Park – skip the crowded beaches and head inland to explore Beaufort Lake. Beaufort Lake Caravan Park is located on the banks of Beaufort Lake and provides the perfect family getaway. Beaufort Lake is the ideal little watering hole for swimming, fishing, kayaking and even skiing. Along the banks of the Lake you will find a playground, walking tracks, fitness equipment and the Koori Art Trail.

Avoca Caravan Park is located on the banks of the Avoca River and surrounded by the Avoca Golf course – an ideal location for a quiet and restful stay and within easy walking distance to the town centre. This park is perfect for families, prospectors, overnight, short or long stays and travellers of all ages.
