The Glut
The Glut Farm is set within a magnificent one hundred acre landscaped garden. This incredible retreat backs onto the Mount Cole State Forest and its large open windows allow you to take in a full view of the local wildlife and the glorious surroundings. The house is surrounded by the most magical of gardens which is a riot of colours in Spring.
Owners, Larry and Sally, adore working in the garden and this will be evident when you visit. There is an extensive kitchen garden which provides them with almost all the vegetables and fruit we need throughout the year and a mini orchard where you can find pears, apples and all sorts of delicious berries which you can pick fresh from the bushes.
Mt Mitchell
Mount Mitchell is a stunning historic homestead established in 1838 captures early Victorian rural history. It’s significant historical buildings surrounded by 10 acres of formal gardens and sweeping views of the Pyrenees mountain ranges provide a magnificent for you to soak in some sunshine.
The manicured gardens comprise formal rose gardens, impressive working kitchen gardens, parkland and an extensive orchard featuring a range of fruit trees.
There is also an exceptional range of trees of interest. Avenues of elms line both the entrance to the homestead along the driveway and various fence lines around property. Poplars, plane trees and cypress, hawthorn and viburnum hedges structure the garden into green rooms.
Expansive lawns, winding paths, arched hedgerows and parterre gardens create much interest and you can spend hours taking all of it in.
A beautifully positioned lake offers a splendid vista to the west with the Pyrenees Mountains rising majestically in the background.
Guests can be involved in the day-to-day activities of Australian farming life alongside those who run the property. Visitors can collect fresh eggs from the resident hens, catch yabbies and fish from the Mount Mitchell lake and harvest fresh fruits, vegetables, herbs and more from the impressive kitchen garden and extensive orchard.
Mooramong
Step into the natural elegance of rural life at the historic Mooramong Estate, just 50 minutes west of Ballarat. Nestled amidst sprawling golden plains.
Mooramong was a 21st birthday present for Donald ‘Scobie’ Mackinnon, heir to a legal and horseracing fortune. In 1937, Scobie married Hollywood star Claire Adams in London after a three-week whirlwind romance. The couple returned to Victoria after a long honeymoon.
The couple transformed the homestead into a fashionable Hollywood style retreat, with pool, cabana, games room and bar with modern flourishes.
Guests can now stay at Mooramong Homestead in a Tiny House or in the refurbished shearers cottages filled with classic charm with contemporary comforts. Visitors can wonder the stunning gardens and tour the inside of the Homestead which has been left exactly how movie star Claire Adams and Donald “Scobie” Mackinnon left it back in the 1940s.
