Elmhurst was first settled in 1840 and is located midway between Avoca and Ararat along the Pyrenees Highway. Elmhurst provides access to Mount Mole State Forest along established driving and walking tracks. It is also a short drive to Mount Buangor and the Pyrenees Wineries.
